No. In stores, restaurants and other public places the trained work is what matters, and staff cannot demand the letter. You keep it for housing, where a landlord may ask for it, and you file an airline form before a flight. Many people keep a copy handy for peace of mind, but at the door it is the task, not the paper.

Because they do different jobs. The letter records that a Licensed Clinical Doctor found a real disability-related need. The trained task is what the dog actually performs in the moment and what carries public access under the ADA. A letter with no trained dog opens no doors. A trained dog with no real need is not a psychiatric service dog. The two were built to work as a pair.

Only two things. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability, and what work or task has the dog been trained to perform. They cannot ask about your condition, demand the letter, require an ID card, or ask the dog to demonstrate. You answer plainly and you move on. That limit comes straight from the Department of Justice.

Mostly in housing. The Fair Housing Act lets a landlord ask for documentation of a disability-related need before granting a reasonable accommodation, like waiving a no-pet rule or a pet fee. The signed letter is what answers that ask. For flights you submit an airline service animal form instead. In day to day public places, the letter usually stays in its folder.

No, and this is the honest line. Comfort by presence, the calm of a dog simply being there, is real and valuable, but the ADA does not count it as a trained task. A task is a specific action the dog is taught to do, like deep pressure, a guided exit or a wake from a nightmare. If a dog only soothes by existing, it may fit a Support Animal, not a Service Dog.

The letter is valid for 365 days from the date of purchase. When it lapses you can renew it if your need continues. The dog does not lose anything when the letter expires. It stays a Service Dog as long as it performs its trained work. The Service Dog Training Plus attestation, the add-on for Service Dogs, does not expire at all.

They cannot refuse you because they doubt your disability or dislike dogs. If the dog is doing its trained work and behaving, the door stays open. Good public manners are part of being a real team.
