A Service Dog is defined by what it is trained to do. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, it is a dog individually trained to perform tasks for a person with a disability. That trained work is the reason it may enter stores, restaurants, workplaces and most public spaces where pets are not allowed. The dog does the job. The law follows the job.

A Service Dog also keeps housing protection and can travel in the airplane cabin under the Air Carrier Access Act with the federal Department of Transportation form.

A Support Animal helps by being there. It is not trained to a task, and it does not need to be. The federal Fair Housing Act treats it as an assistance animal, not a pet, so a landlord must make a reasonable accommodation to allow it, even in a no-pets building. The request is simple. You ask in writing and you provide a letter from a Licensed Clinical Doctor that confirms a disability-related need.

A Support Animal is not guaranteed an airline cabin seat since the 2021 rule, and it does not get into stores or restaurants.

This is the role that gets lost. A therapy animal is a volunteer. With its handler it visits a hospital ward, a school reading program, a library or a care home and brings comfort to the people there. A child reads aloud to a calm dog. A resident in a care home feels a soft head on the lap. The benefit goes outward, to many people, not to the animal's owner.

Here is the crisp, honest part. A therapy animal has no individual public access right and no housing right. It does not enter a place because the law says so. That registration is for the program, not a key to stores, planes or a no-pets apartment.

No. A Support Animal stays with one owner and carries a housing right under the Fair Housing Act. A therapy animal goes out with a handler to comfort other people and carries no individual access or housing right. People mix the words, but the rights are different.

Not by right. A therapy animal enters a hospital, school or care home only because that place invited the visiting team. It has no public access right and no guaranteed airline cabin seat. Those belong to a trained Service Dog under the ADA and the Air Carrier Access Act.

Only a Service Dog. Public access comes from real trained tasks under the Americans with Disabilities Act, not from a card or a registry. A Support Animal and a therapy animal do not have that right, no matter what any website sells.

A Licensed Clinical Doctor reviews your situation and decides if a disability-related need is present. For a Support Animal that becomes an honest housing letter. For a Service Dog it confirms a qualifying disability alongside the trained task records. If there is no need, you are told plainly and not charged.
