HIPAA is the short name for a federal law from 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. One part of it, the Privacy Rule, sets out how your health information must be guarded. Once a Licensed Clinical Doctor reviews your case, that doctor is a covered health care provider, so the health details tied to you are Protected Health Information under the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
